About the Establishment of AMU & BHU

Aligarh Muslim University or AMU is a central university. The current Chancellor of Amu is Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin and Vice-Chancellor as Prof. Tariq Mansoor. The university was established by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875 as Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The college was given the university status as Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. The seed of its inception was sowed when in 1905 Madan Mohan Malaviya (politician and educational reformer) presented his plan of starting a university during the 21^st conference of the Indian National Congress. He put forward his concern regarding India’s poverty and focused on technology and science to students with religion and culture. He also favored the English language as a medium of instruction and with time planned to add another Indian language. In 1911, the Hindu University Society got registered to gain funds and support for building this university, and with the ratification of Annie Besant, Rameshwar Singh, H.H. With thriving in every aspect; AMU hit another milestone by constricting the Centenary gate to effectively mark the completion of 100 years of being Aligarh Muslim University. The gate was inaugurated virtually by the university chancellor, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin on the sacred day of 17^th October 2020 to honor Sir Syed on his birth anniversary alongside. The Chancellor delightfully congratulated the whole AMU fraternity for this day and made this university progress in their respective roles of teachers, students, administrators, etc.

On 22^nd December; the centenary celebration was joined by the respected Prime Minister, Narendra Modi as a chief guest. The PM wholeheartedly congratulated the institute for the same and also of its effectiveness in serving society even in the covid-19 scenario. He referred to the university as mini India and was highly impressed by the diversity AMU has maintained as an institution by taking into account the importance of Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, and Sanskrit languages.

The Centenary gate got constructed near the area of Purani Chungi. The gate is made of red sandstone and the reproduction of Bab-e-Syed gate of AMU, but quite bigger than that. Its structure is beautifully modeled, which evokes and sustains the essence of old-style buildings of Islamic architecture. The gate holds great importance as it opens to all the departments starting from the Commerce department and Minto Circle School, followed by all the other constituent buildings of the institution. This splendid antique look also signifies this institute as being one of the oldest universities of India.

AMU Bab-e-Syed Gate

Bab-e-Syed Gate marks the historical landmark of Aligarh Muslim University. The Gate is the central public gateway to the university, leading to all the departments and faculties, guest houses, Maulana Azad Library (the central library), etc. It is made of red sandstone and some white sandstone. It has cupped arches. The structure has a massive gate in the center with two identical short heightened gates on either side of the middle.

On the top of the main gate at parapet; there is this lattice-work being done. There are two colossal miners attached to the main-medial gate and on its left and right side; on them, there is the presence of chatter. Similarly, two small miners are attached to both the entrances gates individually with the chatter work there. On the region of white sandstone, some Arabic calligraphy is done.

Bab-e-Syed symbolizes in itself the gateway to the dreams and aspirations of millions of students coming here to learn and gain. It marks the existence of AMU which is still and alive. The gate is of great value to each and every individual who is a part of AMU. All the major rallies and protests take their initial form at this crack AMU entrance exams gate, only marking the importance it has clasped as the AMU main doorway.

The gate counts in the list of some tourist-visiting places of AMU as its design also resembles some Mughal architectures and hence it fascinates many visitors to explore and clearly observe its construction style.

Both of them mark the strong existence of Aligarh Muslim University as one of the oldest institutions of India. The gates are not just an access key that leads to the university campus but indeed they are the emblems to the directions where one can acquire knowledge and skills. They lead to the buildings which nurture students to excel in their lives at the national as well as international level.

These gates are those representations of this foundation which constantly reminds the people that AMU is worthy enough to conquer the heights of success in every field. It’s as old as Sir Syed Khan’s dreams were and as firm as he has always imagined it to be in his life.

Irfan Habib: The Pioneer of History

“Without undue modesty, we can say we know more about India’s past than Marx did” written by Irfan Habib in ‘Problems of Marxist historiography’ A highly prominent ancient and medieval historian of India, he has served as a history professor in the Department of History AMU from 1969-91. And in 2007, he was granted the position of Emeritus Professor by this university. Having worked in this field for many decades now, he stands from the Marxist school.

Early Life and Education

Professor Irfan Habib was born in 1931 in the Vadodara city of the state of Gujarat. He completed his under-graduation and post-graduation from Aligarh Muslim University in the years 1951 and 1953 respectively. He effectively excelled with first position in academics in both the programs. After obtaining his master’s degree, he started as a lecturer in AMU and then became the Reader here. Moreover, later in 1956; he acquired the degree of D. Phil from New College Oxford.

Irfan Habib is foremost associated with Marxism; he is often titled as Marxist Historian. This signifies his belief in the existence of classless society which ultimately would nullify the concept of upper and lower class and hence no conflict would take place. His works effectively reflects his Marxist ideology. He strongly opposes communalism and favours the promotion of Secularism; a society capable of putting end to the religious tussles among general population. His ideas has influenced large group of people till date.

The History Department, AMU

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim, was deeply interested in history and archaeology. Therefore, he put great emphasis on this field. The Department of History has been prevalent in AMU since 1875 when AMU was established as Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh. The teachings on this subject were initiated from then on, and since then, the department has made innumerable achievements and succeeded in various aspects. In 1968, the department was included as a Centre under the Centres of Advanced Study Programmes of the University Grants Commission (UGC) led by an Oxonian, Professor Noor-ul-Hasan.

Speedy research was happening in medieval history during his tenure, and a three-storey building was built for the department. Another very distinguished Professor of the History department was Mohd. Habib, Father of Irfan Habib. He became a lecturer at AMU in 1922 and was an Indian Islamic Historian. He actively participated in the Indian National Movement. He focused on history writing and considered that historical writings should be referred to from sources. In 1972, Mohammad Habib Hall was titled after his name. The department is entitled as the hub of medieval history.

The department has a Medieval Archaeology Section that carries out studies and research on the archaeology of medieval times. It also maintains a cartography lab for historical maps and a seminar library for all the events and studies. The department has under-graduation and post-graduation programs. Sir Syed Academy

This particular building was transformed from a military mess to Sir Syed House by Syed Mahmood, son of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1876. However, it was in a ruined state and hence in the 1970s, it was restored to its earliest form and became an academy in Sir Syed’s memory. And its inauguration happened in 1974. The current director of this academy is Prof. Ali Mohammad Naqvi.

Museum- The museum consists of three galleries with a description of Mohammad Anglo-Oriental College history, about Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, and a list of former Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors.
Library- The library in this academy has manuscripts of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh movement. It has various books in Hindi, English, and Urdu languages.
Research- The academy manages a team of researchers engaged in research work and writing books on Sir Syed and the Aligarh Movement; they conduct lectures and seminars on Sir Syed and carry out various projects concerning Sir Syed.

Gulistan-e-Syed is the university park maintained by the Department of Land and Gardens. It won’t be a fact to deny that nature provides peace and how mesmerizing its proximity can be. Kennedy Hall-

Every university tends to sustain some art and literature. It actively provides room for the students to participate and execute their literary skills. In AMU, the Kennedy auditorium was started getting built-in 1959 and got completely constructed in 1962. The hall organizes various interesting programs for the general population like, film festivals, music shows, dramas, programs for alumni or reputed guests who visit AMU, and many other events. The stage grooms students to make the best of their talents for the national level. The building of Kennedy hall is well-built in western style. The song Mere Mahboob from the movie Mere Mahboob (1963) was also shot in this auditorium.

Jama Masjid AMU

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan got the Jama Masjid construction work started inside the AMU campus in 1879, however, the task was fully achieved in 1915. It is the oldest and historical masjid of India and its building style is inspired by the Badshahi Mosque of Lahore which was constructed by the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Its plan is conventional and has the great essence of Mughal designs and architecture. This style enchants many travelers to visit this mosque and explore it.

The marbles of this monument have the psalms of the Quran in calligraphy. It has multi-colored glasses on doors when hit by sunlight looks so beautiful. Women can also visit the mosque during particular visiting times.

Strachey Hall

This building was the first one in AMU campus and got completely constructed in 1885. The hall was labelled after the name of Sir John Strachey. Its architectural design of this hall is influenced by the Harvard and Cambridge College. It is made up of Red Sandstone.

Victoria Gate

Built in 1894, it was titled Sadar Darwaza. But, later in 1914, it got renamed as Victorian gate after the name of Queen Victoria. It is the entry gate of Strachey hall. The architecture of this gate is a blend of Mughal and English. There is the presence of inscriptions on the marble of the gate and a clock space on the tower of the gate. The antique style and history of this gate attract many visitors to this place and make them curious to know about the gate better.

Musa Dakri Museum

The museum has a preserved collection of sculptures and antique objects by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan from the 1^st to 11^th century AD. Sir Syed was considered the founder of Medieval Archaeology and this museum gives an insight into the findings of Sir Syed and what he mustered.
